Houston quarterback Case Keenum’s status is ‘day-to-day’

Anyone looking for information on the health of Houston quarterback Case Keenum will have to wait longer — maybe until kickoff at the Rose Bowl on Saturday night.

The Heisman Trophy hopeful, his team preparing to face UCLA, was still recovering Monday from what was being called a mild concussion suffered against Texas El Paso last week.

“We’re following our concussion management plan and his status is day-to-day,” Coach Kevin Sumlin said on a conference call with reporters. “We’re not going to update that every day this week up until game time.”

Keenum was injured in the third quarter of a 54-24 victory, hit moments after throwing a pass for an interception. He was replaced by Cotton Turner, who completed nine of 10 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Turner played well in the Cougars’ season opener against Texas State too.

“It’s a product of how he works during the week,” Sumlin said of his junior backup’s success this fall. “He’s comfortable in what he’s doing and he knows what we’re trying to do.”

Sumlin added that he does not have to limit the playbook with Turner on the field. Nor must he eliminate any of the plays that led to running back Bryce Beall’s 195 rushing yards and three touchdowns against Texas El Paso.

Taking chances

UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel said in the wake of a 35-0 loss to Stanford on Saturday that his team needs to take more risks on offense. It was only the 11th time the Bruins have been shut out since 1960, a span of 558 games.

“We need to find a little more in our big-play arsenal,” Neuheisel said. “We need to take a chance and make plays down field. We made big plays last year with the same guys.”

But, Neuheisel added, “It’s hard to take your shots if you don’t make first downs.”

Quick hits

Running back Derrick Coleman is recovering from a concussion and neck strain. Linebacker David Allen has a broken pinkie finger on his right hand. Defensive tackle Justin Edison has a sprained knee.… Wide receiver Shaquelle Evans, a transfer from Notre Dame, said he has completed the paperwork to enroll at UCLA. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
