Carson could be City Section’s last bet for bowl game

The stars could be aligning for the Carson High football team to repeat the accomplishment Crenshaw pulled off last season in going 14-0 to earn a spot in a CIF state championship bowl game.

So far, the Colts have taken care of business, knocking off Santa Ana Mater Dei and Fontana Miller. Next up is a Friday night game against Santa Margarita at Saddleback College and a win would set up a showdown in two weeks against Mission Viejo, ranked No. 1 by The Times.

“We’re the last one standing,” Coach Elijah Asante said. “We just have to win.”

Defending City Section Division I champion Crenshaw already has two losses and the only other City team that might inject itself into upper-echelon bowl consideration, Harbor City Narbonne, faces difficult assignments ahead against Long Beach Poly and Gardena Serra, not to mention a Marine League game against Carson.

So it could be the Colts or nothing. Quarterback Justin Alo is coming off a 385-yard passing performance against Miller. A win Friday and the Colts will have two weeks to prepare for Mission Viejo because of a well-planned bye week.

Regional playoff proposal

A proposal to have a 16-game high school football schedule that would include Regional playoffs and state bowl championship games is expected to be sent next year for consideration to the sports sections in the California Interscholastic Federation.

A similar proposal was rejected two years ago because schools were against moving up the start of the football season, but more schools have begun starting classes in early August, which could create the opportunity for starting the season at the end of August or the first week in September. Another potential obstacle is the wisdom of a small number of teams playing a 16-game schedule.

Jim Crichlow, the commissioner for the Central Section, said he hopes to discuss a proposal at a commissioners meeting next month and could present a proposal at the State Federated Council meeting on Nov. 1 in Ontario. The proposal would be sent to sections for consideration early next year, but implementation might not happen until the 2012 season.

Big games on Thursday night

For those who want a double dose of high school football, there are a number of outstanding games set for Thursday night, topped by the Marmonte League opener between Thousand Oaks and host Westlake Village Westlake.

Others of interest include Manhattan Beach Mira Costa playing Gardena Serra at El Camino College, Dana Point Dana Hills facing Huntington Beach Edison at Huntington Beach, West Hills Chaminade playing at Venice and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame playing at Woodland Hills Taft.

One of the most intriguing teams is Edison, last season’s Pac-5 Division finalist which was supposed to be in a rebuilding year. But the Chargers have beaten Lakewood Artesia, 59-0, and Long Beach Wilson, 48-7. New quarterback Chase Favreau passed for four touchdowns with no interceptions last week.

Of course, the Chargers will know where they stand over the next three weeks after games against Dana Hills, Anaheim Servite and Santa Ana Mater Dei.

“We’re getting better,” Coach Dave White said.

Memorable game

Jonathan Mesa, a senior running back at Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary, rushed for 365 yards and scored five touchdowns on runs of 19, 2, 5, 66 and 60 yards in a 49-28 victory over Montebello Schurr last week.

Fast start

Sophomore quarterback Fabian Alomar from Canoga Park has thrown six touchdown passes in two games against Washington and Eagle Rock. Next up is Roybal.

“He’s good,” Coach Ivan Moreno said.
