Readers React: Washington state shooting and gun safety at home

To the editor: Your article about the school shooting in Seattle spoke to the uncertainty about what precipitated this tragedy. If the article had included a reference to the fact that it was not yet known how this child had access to a gun, this would have acknowledged how crucial it is that the “how” question be addressed. (“Washington state high school student kills 1 classmate, injures 4,” Oct. 24)
Much may remain unknown about the motive or emotional state of this and many other school shooters. What is known is that many of the guns used in school shootings are obtained from the shooter’s home.
Many of these tragedies could be prevented if we as a society took seriously the necessity of making sure that guns are stored in such a way that they cannot be accessed by children.
