Streak remains intact

The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball team ran its winning streak in league play to 70 consecutive matches March 24, but the task in doing so wasn’t easy.

The Breakers rallied from a set deficit at Costa Mesa in what would be a five-set Orange Coast League match, rallying for a 23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 17-25, 15-8 victory on the Mustangs’ home floor which kept them undefeated in league play (2-0).

Junior outside hitter Pete Obradovich’s big match included 28 kills, 14 digs and three assists for the Breakers, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 2 and now 4-5 overall. Sophomore outside hitter Josh McManus had 12 kills and 12 digs, junior libero Cole Paxson 45 assists, six kills and 12 digs, senior defensive specialist Dylan Davis 13 digs, and junior defensive specialist/opposite Bruce Knill 10 digs.

The Breakers improved to 67-1 all-time in their best-of-five match series with Costa Mesa.

The Mustangs fell to 1-1 in league and 9-2 overall.

At the junior varsity level, the Breakers defeated Costa Mesa to win its 90th consecutive match in league play.

The Breakers are back on the court next Tuesday for a 5:15 p.m. league match at Calvary Chapel.

Boys’ Tennis

The Breakers, the No. 2 team in CIF-SS Division 4, improved to 3-0 in Orange Coast League action March 24 by blanking host Saddleback, 18-0.

Sweeping in singles play were Tristan Krogius (6-0, 6-0) and Francis Pillsbury (6-1) at the No. 1 line, No. 2 Mason Libby (6-2, 6-1, 6-0), and No. 3 Sam Reynolds (6-3, 6-2, 6-1). Sweeps in doubles were recorded by the No. 1 teams of Ethan Gee/Taylor Tran (6-2, 6-2) and Gee/Hunter Sokolovic (6-0), No. 2 team Hayden Seitz/Jack Pietig (6-1, 6-0, 6-0), and No. 3 team Taylor Sokolovic/Blake Hawkins (6-2, 6-0, 6-0).

The Breakers, play a pair of nonleague matches next week starting with a 3 p.m. home match Tuesday against El Toro. They travel Wednesday for a 3:15 p.m. match at Mission Viejo.

Boys’ Golf

The Breakers headed into spring break with another victory in Orange Coast League play, a 211-244 home win March 24 over Estancia at Aliso Viejo Country Club (par 37).

Dante Fornaro of the Breakers was the match medalist with a low score of 38 on the back nine.

The Breakers upped their league record to 3-0. The had previously defeated the Eagles, 206-251, March 17 at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa.

They improved to 4-3 overall.

“This was a great win for us,” Coach Scott Finn said. “Dante was our standout player. This [38] is the lowest competitive round that we have had this year from an individual player.”

The Breakers return to the links April 12 when they take on Costa Mesa in a 3 p.m. league match at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Track and Field

The Breakers, idle since a March 23 Orange Coast League dual meet against Godinez, are competing Friday and Saturday at the Trabuco Hills Invitational and Stanford Invitational.
