Breakers go for three-peat

The Laguna Beach High girls’ golf team took its first swing at its 2015 season this week.

The Breakers twice took on Dana Hills to open the new season, two of six nonleague matches on their schedule.

Laguna enters the year with three returning golfers from a year ago (BellaRose Robinson, Hailey McCullough, Hanna Burnett) and one golfer (Murphy Thompson) from the 2012-13 teams. Gone are several key components, including last year’s Orange Coast League MVP, Halle Redfearn and OCL runner-up and first-team pick, MaryKate Quellmalz, and second-team all-leaguer Leslie Dwight.

The Breakers, under fifth-year head Coach Scott Finn and assistant Coach Sean Quigley, have won the last two OCL championships, going 24-0 against league competition.

Coach’s take: “We have a really young team and we are excited to kick the season off,” Finn said.

Team strengths: “We have great leadership in our captain, Hailey McCullough, and returning players BellaRose Robinson, Hannah Burnett, and Murphy Thompson.” Finn said.

The schedule: “We start out against Dana Hills which is one of the best teams in the county,” Finn said. “I think it’s important for our team to rub shoulders with some of the best up-and-coming players.”
