Sommerville wins division title

Sommerville Softball, a Laguna Beach-based men’s senior softball team, recently won a Senior Softball USA Masters World Series division championship in Las Vegas.

More than 500 teams participated in the series which encompassed three weekends. Sommerville competed in and won the tournament’s elite division, 50 Major Plus, Oct. 2-4.

Winning the World Series completed a triple crown in men’s senior softball for Sommerville, which first won the Western Division title in August in Sacramento. The title allowed the team to represent the Western United States in the national title game Oct 2, against Proven Legends Express from Macon, Ga. Sommerville scored a 31-9 mercy-rule victory. From there, the squad went undefeated through the remainder of the tournament, going 6-0 and culminating its title run with a 24-17 triumph over Arizona Elite in the final game of the World Series.

The team includes Laguna Beach locals Dave Sommerville, sponsor of Sommerville Softball, and Dave Meggison, a player/coach for the team.

Playing all over the United States, Sommerville Softball, also sponsored by Louisville Slugger, went 48-1-2 in the 2015 season and won every tournament in which it was entered. In addition to winning the SSUSA Triple Crown, Sommerville won the prestigious Great Smoky Mountain Senior Classic in Tennessee in June.

The Sommerville Softball men’s senior team is: Dave Meggison, Brian Hausner, Darrell Beeler, Dwayne Curry, Gary Fisher, Greg Bovero, Isac Alvidrez, Jimmy Ferguson, John Heller, John Keigley, Keith Benjamin, Mike Reed, Paul Salow, Phil Struck, Robbie Robinson, Ron Parnell, Ronni Salcedo and Scott Logan.

Mountain Bike season

The Laguna Beach Interscholastic Mountain Bike Team will kick off its second season with a meeting Tuesday at the Susi Q Center (380 Third Street, Laguna Beach).

The team is open to sixth- through 12th-grade students who reside in Laguna Beach. All skill levels are welcome. The season runs December through May and racing begins in March. There are races for middle school, freshman, sophomore, junior varsity, varsity and other levels. Students will compete against more than 60 schools within the local Southern California League.

The Laguna Beach team is registered with the National Interscholastic Cycling Assn.
