The Times’ high school All-Area baseball team
P: Jack Flaherty, Harvard-Westlake, Sr. A 10-0 record and 0.63 ERA provided a clue to Flaherty’s exceptional senior year. He had 125 strikeouts in 78 innings and walked 12. A first-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals.
P: Griffin Canning, Santa Margarita, Sr. The UCLA-bound Canning led Santa Margarita to the Southern Section Division 1 championship, striking out 11 in a 3-1 victory at Dodger Stadium. He was 11-3 on the season.
C: Chris Betts, Long Beach Wilson, Jr. One of Southern California’s top pro prospects for next season, Betts batted .337 with four home runs and was the co-player of the year in the Moore League.
INF: Keston Hiura, Valencia, Sr. The UC Irvine signee batted .500 and led California with 14 home runs. He had 48 hits and was the Foothill League MVP.
INF: Cole Young, Norco, Sr. The USC signee finished with 11 home runs for the Big VIII League champions.
INF: Brian Schales, Edison, Sr. The Long Beach State signee was the Sunset League MVP. He batted .396 with seven home runs and was solid at shortstop.
INF: Ezra Steinberg, Harvard-Westlake, Jr. With 47 hits, a .448 batting average and 14 stolen bases, the Oregon commit stood out from beginning to end.
OF: Scott Hurst, Bishop Amat, Sr. The Cal State Fullerton signee batted .419 with 25 RBIs and also was the closer for the Division 3 champions.
OF: Brady Shockey, JSerra, So. The co-player of the year in the Trinity League batted .352 in helping the Lions reach a Division 1 semifinal.
OF: D.J. Peters, Glendora, Sr. The 6-foot-6 Peters, a Cal State Fullerton signee, hit .359 with four home runs and 11 doubles for the Baseline League champions.
UT: Hudson Hughes, Foothill, Sr. Hughes led his team to the Sunset League title and a Division 1 runner-up spot, going 8-1 on the mound and batting .356.
