Football: Elijah Asante gets another win over Mater Dei

“We shocked the world again.”

So says Elijah Asante, an assistant coach at Santa Margarita who twice was on the winning side against Mater Dei when he was coaching at Carson.

This time, it was Santa Margarita defeating unbeaten Mater Dei, 16-7, in a Trinity League game on Friday night that keeps the league playoff picture as unpredictable as ever.

“It was a terrific effort,” Coach Harry Welch said.

Kyle Sweet played quarterback the entire game in place of KJ Costello, who was injured.

Only three teams are guaranteed Pac-5 Division playoff berths from the Trinity, but there’s growing recognition that the league might be awarded the division’s two at-large playoff berths because of its strength. Nothing is certain, however, which is why it’s best to finish in the top three.

With two games remaining, St. John Bosco (8-0, 3-0) looks in the best shape. Mater Dei (7-1, 2-1) and Servite (5-3, 2-1) are next, followed by Orange Lutheran (6-2, 1-2), Santa Margarita (4-4, 1-2) and JSerra (5-3, 0-3).

Servite still has to play JSerra and St. John Bosco. Orange Lutheran still has Santa Margarita and Mater Dei.

Good luck on figuring out the order of finish.
