Baseball: Burroughs’ Kyle Nichol strikes out 13 in VIBL playoff opener

Share

Burbank Burroughs won the Pacific League baseball championshp last season, and it looks as if the Indians will be just fine in 2016 thanks to the development of senior pitcher Kyle Nichol.

A seldom-used relief pitcher in 2015, Nichol has developed into a top starter this summer. He struck out 13, walked one and allowed three hits on Friday night to help Burroughs defeat Granada Hills, 6-0, in a first-round game of the VIBL playoffs.

Earlier this summer, Nichol inflicted one of only three losses suffered by No. 1-seeded Woodland Hills West (El Camino Real).

Burroughs got two hits and three RBIs from Alec Saavedra.

In other opening games, Saugus defeated Kennedy, 5-0. Crespi defeated Paraclete, 3-1. Taft defeated Cleveland, 3-2, in eight innings. Lee Brandzel allowed four hits in six innings. Camarillo defeated Burbank, 15-4. Royal defeated St. Francis on a forfeit.

In Monday’s quarterfinals, it will be Royal at El Camino Real, Burroughs at Saugus, Crespi at Hart and Taft at Camarillo.
