Baseball: Fast start for former Valencia standout Brian Mundell

Brian Mundell, a sophomore catcher at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who was a standout at Valencia High, is batting .455 for the red-hot Mustangs (6-1), who took two of three games from UCLA over the weekend.

Mundell had a three-run home run on Saturday.

The top three hitters for Pepperdine (6-1) are all former Southern California high school standouts. Aaron Barnett (Capistrano Valley) is hitting .467. Brandon Caruso (Loyola) is hitting .462. Aaron Brown (Chatsworth) is hitting .444 with 12 RBIs.

Freshman Clay Williamson (JSerra) leads Cal State Fullerton in hitting with a .455 average.

Former Los Osos standout Jake Hernandez leads USC (7-0) in hitting with a .429 average.

Former Palisades shortstop Elliott Barzilli is batting .355 for Georgia Tech.

Former Riverside Poly catcher R.J. Ybarra is batting .400 for Arizona State.

Cody Ramer (Simi Valley) has 14 hits and is batting .452 for Arizona. Former Taft catcher Jordan Berger has six hits in 13 at-bats.

Bradley Lezak (Oak Park) is hitting .481 with 13 hits for Lewis & Clark.
