Baseball: Robert Reeves delivers walk-off home run for Hart
Robert Reeves got so hot last year during the Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoffs that he helped Hart reach the championship game. Now he’s doing it again, so he might be known as Mr. Playoffs.
The senior catcher hit a walk-off home run in the eighth inning to give the Indians a 2-1 victory over Corona. Nick Plaia had homered in the sixth inning to tie the game for Hart, 1-1.
“He lives for the playoffs,” Coach Jim Ozella said. “He came up clutch at the end.”
Brendan Henry got the win in relief.
The Indians will play No. 1-seeded JSerra in a quarterfinal game on Friday at home. They will have to face sidearmer Collin Quinn (11-0).
West Ranch 3, Norco 2: The Foothill League champs advanced to the Division 1 quarterfinals behind Jack Cunningham, who allowed five hits. Nico Valdez contributed two RBIs.
JSerra 4, Loyola 1: Cole Samuels threw five shutout innings and Davis Wendzel had two RBIs for the Lions.
Orange Lutheran 4, Huntington Beach 3: The Lancers pulled out the win in eight innings to eliminate the defending Division 1 champions. Jasiah Dixon had a three-run home run. Chris Burica threw seven innings, striking out six. Luke Mattson threw the eighth.
El Toro 1, Oaks Christian 0: Sam Glick struck out 10 and threw a two-hitter. It was the second consecutive shutout of the playoffs for El Toro pitchers. Dane Morrow was the tough-luck loser. El Toro scored in the sixth inning.
Murrieta Mesa 1, Esperanza 0: Four pitchers combined on a four-hitter for Murrieta Mesa.
Cypress 4, El Dorado 1: Ryan McCanless had four hits and Raul Salazar threw a complete game for Cypress.
Harvard-Westlake 5, Vista Murrieta 4: Julian Girod came through with the game-winning hit in the eighth inning for the Wolverines. Brandon Luna had three hits for Vista Murrieta. The quarterfinal matchups: JSerra at Hart; Harvard-Westlake at Cypress; Murrieta Mesa vs. Orange Lutheran at Hart Park; West Ranch at El Toro.
Beckman 8, Charter Oak 7: Austin Schell had two RBIs for Beckman.
Redondo 8, La Salle 1: Marco Valenzuela had three hits and three RBI for 28-2 Redondo.
Foothill 8, Carter 2: Carson Herrell struck out seven in six innings. Nick Provenzano had three hits and Cameron Dutcher had three RBIs.
South Hills 3, Paramount 1: It took 11 innings before No. 1-seeded South Hills prevailed in a Division 2 game.
Mission Viejo 6, Santa Barbara 5: Tanner Bibee drove in Jake Figueroa with a two-out single in the top of the eighth inning for Mission Viejo.
Culver City 2, San Luis Obispo 1: Eli Saucedo gave up four hits in six innings. Nolan Martinez got the save. It will be Redondo vs. Culver City on Friday, with Martinez on the mound.
El Segundo 6, Temescal Canyon 5: El Segundo scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Spencer Long had two hits, including a home run.
La Mirada 7, Rancho Cucamonga 1: Shawn Dumser and Dante Mancia combined on a three-hitter.
Damien 7, Oxnard 4: The Spartans rallied from a 3-1 deficit.
Bishop Amat 3, Walnut 2: Ben Hurst had two hits for the Lancers. Diego Barrera struck out eight.
Woodbridge 6, San Dimas 2: Woodbridge advanced to a Division 3 quarterfinal against Beckman.
Cantwell-Sacred Heart 6, Garey 0: Cantwell won the Division 5 game. Zach Thomas (8-0) threw a three-hitter.
Village Christian 3, Banning 1: Colin McGeary threw a one-hitter for the Crusaders.
California 4, Fullerton 1: Nick Gallego hit a home run and Brandon Acosta had two doubles.
