Boys’ basketball: 15 Open Division teams are still alive in state playoffs

Share

I’m still trying to figure out what was the point of the Southern Section Open Division playoffs other than to have a super division and help other teams win a section title.

Fifteen of the 16 teams that were selected for the Open Division are still alive in the Southern California Regionals. The teams have a combined record of 25-1.

If winning a section title means more than winning a state title, than the Southern Section has a public relations problem among the schools that got pulled from their divisions just so Mater Dei might have some competition in the Open Division. If winning a state title means more than winning a section title, then everything is quite OK.

The Southern Section plans to re-evaluate everything at the conclusion of the season, and I’m sure lots of coaches will offer the positives and negatives.

As it stands, former Open Division teams should win state titles in Divisions I, II, III and IV. In 10 years, they’ll have to explain to their grandkids why they didn’t win a Southern Section title if they were so good.
