Boys’ basketball: Eyassu Worku of Los Alamitos scores 51 points in victory

Eyassu Worku, a senior guard at Los Alamitos who signed with UC Irvine, has been one of the most impressive performers in the opening month of the season.

He scored 51 points on Monday night in an 87-80 victory over Arizona Highland in the Under Armour Holiday Classic.

Fairfax improved to 10-1 with a 43-41 win over host Torrey Pines.

Freshman Ethan Anderson scored 12 points and senior Babacar Thiombane added 10 points. Jake Gilliam scored 21 points for Torrey Pines. Corona Centennial defeated Archbishop Mitty, 70-53. Jordan Griffin led the Huskies. Compton defeated Georgia Pebblebrook, 66-65.

Chibueze Jacobs scored 30 points but Sherman Oaks Notre Dame was beaten by Oak Park, 66-45. Sophomore Riley Battin had 20 points for Oak Park.

In the MaxPreps tournament, Chino Hills stayed unbeaten with a 125-99 win over Milwaukee Rufus King. The Ball brothers combined for 85 points. LaMelo scored 30 points, LiAngelo 29 and Lonzo 26. Redondo advanced to the semifinals with an 83-57 win over Bentonville. Leland Green scored 32 points.

Alemany lost to Georgia Jonesboro, 59-56. Shacquille Dawkins had 21 points. Santa Margarita defeated Seattle Prep, 72-48. Freshman Jake Kyman scored 14 points.

Etiwanda defeated Gardena Serra, 56-50. Capistrano Valley upset Viewpoint, 46-43. Sayo Denloye had 17 points for Viewpoint. Mission Viejo defeated North Hollywood, 71-62. Chris Meyer and Arthur Weimholt each scored 16 points. Harvard-Westlake defeated Indio, 73-40. Wolfgang Novogratz scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

Damien defeated Palm Desert, 67-42. Isaiah White finished with 17 points. Elijah McCullough and Bryce Peters added 13 points apiece. St. John Bosco defeated Washington Glacier Peak, 63-49. Freshman Makani Whiteside and JJ Watson each scored 17 points. St. John Bosco is 11-1.

Jonah Mathews scored 30 points in Santa Monica’s 73-59 win over Oregon Franklin. Rancho Mirage improved to 11-0 with a 74-39 win over New Mexico Carlsbad. Charles Neal scored 25 points. Villa Park defeated Fresno Central, 55-54.

Servite defeated Valley Christian, 53-52, on a basket by Cameron Griffin as time expired. Pearson Parker finished with 18 points. Burbank Burroughs improved to 9-1 with a 84-79 win over Savanna. Steven Hubbell scored 18 points, including five threes. Ross Lee also had 18 points. Crean Lutheran is 9-1 after a 77-57 win over Anaheim Canyon. La Mirada defeated Yorba Linda, 49-44. Foothill beat Tesoro, 58-47.

The semifinals of the Orange Holiday Classic at Hope University will be Foothill-La Mirada at 8:30 p.m. and Esperanza-Crean Lutheran at 7 p.m.

Ayala defeated Corona del Mar, 71-44. John Edgar scored 23 points.

Orange Lutheran defeated Arizona Red Mountain, 75-62. KaVaughn Scott scored 20 points and Zac Jervis 16.

In the Chaminade tournament, Will Johnson scored 23 points in Palisades’ 64-33 win over Kennedy. Chaminade defeated Eastside, 58-43. Josh Hauser had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Chaminade. Muir defeated Marshall, 67-33. Lancaster defeated Reseda, 56-50. Taft defeated Menlo, 65-41. Village Christian defeated Moorpark, 65-60. Josh Caston led the Crusaders with 16 points and Isaac Etter 15.

At Modesto Christian, El Camino Real fell to Immanuel, 53-51. Brandon Russell had 17 points and Myles Marchand 16.

In the Hart tournament, Cleveland defeated Arleta, 72-57. Five players scored in double figures, led by Wayne Currie, who had 20 points.

In the Santa Barbara tournament, Westlake defeated Nordhoff, 65-21. Drew Brackens scored 11 points.

In Chicago, Crespi defeated Hinsdale Central, 61-52. De’Anthony Melton finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Williams had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

In South Carolina, Mater Dei improved to 12-0 with an 81-44 win over Myrtle Beach. Michael Wang finished with 15 points.

Flintridge Prep defeated Palmer, 57-56. Dante Fregoso had 19 points.

Freshman Jarod Lucas of Los Altos scored 45 points in an 80-62 win over Covina. Los Altos is 7-0.
