Boys’ basketball: Chino Hills, Mater Dei advance to championship game of Tarkanian Classic

The organizers of the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas can’t be any happier after Chino Hills and Santa Ana Mater Dei rallied to secure semifinal victories and advance to meet each other in Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. championship game at Bishop Gorman.

Chino Hills overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat Eastvale Roosevelt, 76-68. The Huskies improved to 10-0 and won their 45th consecutive game.

Eli Scott made eight consecutive free throws in the final minutes to help Chino Hills pull out the victory. LiAngelo Ball finished with 22 points, Scott 20 and LaMelo Ball 19. Jemarl Baker led Roosevelt with 29 points. He was hot from three-point range, making seven.

Mater Dei improved to 11-0 by overcoming a 14-point deficit to defeat Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, 86-79, in overtime. Spencer Freedman scored 26 points and Justice Sueing 25.

The last time Chino Hills played Mater Dei was in the Southern Section tournament last season, and Chino Hills won, 102-54, in the worst defeat inflicted on Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight.

Crossroads defeated Bishop O’Dowd, 45-34. Jacob Ray had 14 points and Cole Thomas added 11.

Camarillo defeated Pasadena, 68-62. Jaime Jaquez had 23 points. Bryce Hamilton scored 25 points for Pasadena. Harvard-Westlake defeated Las Vegas Coronado, 73-62. Johnny Juzang scored 22 points and Cassius Stanley 19.

At Mission Prep, West Ranch defeated Fremont, 56-49. Austin Galuppo had 20 points. El Camino Real defeated Imanuel, 56-53. Troy Biglow had 20 points and Eddy Egun 18 points. Bishop Montgomery defeated BC Christian Academy, 57-26.

Jon Staggers scored 31 points but Dorsey lost to Seattle Lincoln, 79-73.

In Hawaii, Alemany defeated Houston, 57-11. Brandon Davis and Fred Odhiambo had 10 points apiece.

In the San Fernando Valley Invitational, North Hollywood defeated Oakwood, 59-57. Village Christian defeated Valencia, 66-39. Majur Majak had 13 points and 19 rebounds. Viewpoint defeated Kennedy, 59-51, and will play Village Christian in the semifinals. Michael Okparaocha had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Crescenta Valley defeated Granada Hills, 73-67.

Windward defeated Cleveland, 77-36, to improve to 10-2. Jules Bernard had 21 points and 12 rebounds.

San Marino defeated Flintridge Prep, 66-40. Jadyn Torres had 21 points. Jake Althouse led Flintridge Prep with 19 points.
