Boys’ basketball: Former Kennedy Coach Dean Cadwell has died
Dean Cadwell, who was the first basketball coach when Granada Hills Kennedy opened in 1971 and helped build the Golden Cougars’ program into a City Section power in the 1970s, died Dec. 30 after a brief bout with cancer. He was 83.
He coached future UCLA players Darren Daye and Stuart Gray at Kennedy.
Cadwell was born in South Dakota and moved to North Hollywood in 1956, becoming a teacher at North Hollywood Junior High and later coaching basketball and swimming at North Hollywood while also working as a football official.
He was The Times’ coach of the year in 1978. He retired from the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1991. Cadwell was living in Camarillo.
A celebration of his life will be held Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. at Northridge United Methodist Church, 9650 Reseda Blvd.
