Boys’ basketball: Sean Fernandez scores 44 points to lead North Hollywood

Sean Fernandez isn’t shy about shooting. The North Hollywood senior guard scored 44 points, and it was just enough to help the Huskies edge Sun Valley Poly, 56-55, on Wednesday night in a game for first place in the East Valley League.
Eric Favors missed a three-pointer at the buzzer for Poly. Angel Reinosa had 16 points for the Parrots.
In the West Valley League, Birmingham defeated Cleveland, 78-40. Seth Texeira, Devante Doutrive and Deschon Winston each scored 13 points. Mark Boland led the Patriots with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Taft defeated Chatsworth, 94-47. El Camino Real defeated Granada Hills, 78-37. Troy Biglow had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Russell added 19 points. El Camino hosts Taft on Friday.
In the Western League, University defeated Palisades, 63-57. Jude Agbasi had 20 points and 10 rebounds. University made 14 of 15 free throws. Will Johnson led Palisades with 22 points. In the Western League, Crenshaw defeated Locke, 69-54.
Los Altos improved to 14-1 with a 70-68 Hacienda League victory over Walnut. Freshman Jarod Lucas scored 27 points for Los Altos. Dwight Ramos scored 30 points for Walnut.
In the Mission League, Alemany defeated Harvard-Westlake, 61-56. Brandon Davis, Will Picketts and Shacquille Dawkins all made clutch free throws in the final 1:15. DJ McDonald finished with 17 points. Crespi defeated Loyola, 64-52. De’Anthony Melton had 22 points and 10 assists. Henry Welsh had 18 points and 18 rebounds.
St. Francis got its first league victory in two years with a 69-62 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. Brett Gangi had eight threes and 29 points. St. Francis had lost 18 straight league games. The Golden Knights are coached by first-year Coach Todd Wolfson.
In the Trinity League, Zac Jervis scored 15 points in Orange Lutheran’s 67-46 win over Servite.
In the Moore League, Long Beach Poly defeated Long Beach Jordan, 60-49. Zafir Williams scored 29 points.
In the Sunset League, Los Alamitos defeated Fountain Valley. 64-48.
In the Del Rey League, unbeaten Bishop Montgomery defeated Gardena Serra, 76-48. Jordan Schakel scored 21 points and David Singleton had 18.
In the Big VIII League, Corona Centennial defeated King, 72-38. Ike Anigbogu finished with 24 points.
Rancho Mirage improved to 16-0 overall and 3-0 in the DeAnza League with an 80-36 win over Desert Hot Springs. Charles Neal and Daryn Evans each scored 20 points. Tyrell Robinson was 10 of 10 from the free-throw line.
In the Suburban League, La Mirada improved to 3-0 with a 64-46 win over Bellflower.
Joel Finney scored 40 points in Central City’s 94-30 win over Animo Bunche.
In the Valley Mission League, Van Nuys defeated Kennedy, 71-65, in overtime. Canoga Park defeated Reseda, 37-34.
At Staples Center, San Gabriel Academy defeated Simi Valley, 64-53.
Oak Park defeated Camarillo, 56-44. Keyan Bazargan had 21 points. Riley Battin added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Thomas Frank had 22 points and Darius Vines 20 in St. Bonaventure’s 73-42 win over Carpinteria.
Jonah Mathews scored 22 points in Santa Monica’s 74-26 win over Hawthorne. Rip Economo added 19 points. Beverly Hills defeated El Segundo, 84-52. Mason Daniels had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
