Discussions to begin on moving up sports calendar

Roger Blake, the executive director of the CIF, said he has begun to hold discussions with section commissioners about moving up the sports calendar.
He said California and Texas are among the few states still playing football games this weekend.
With more and more schools beginning classes in early August, it makes perfect sense to begin the football schedule earlier, which would allow the season to end earlier.
Getting all the school districts on board will be the challenge.
But if the official season ends earlier, the CIF will also have to worry about schools seeking to participate in additional games, such as ESPN’s national bowl championships set for next weekend in Florida. Do coaches really want to keep playing past Christmas?
All that and more are up for discussion, along with changes beginning in January regarding limiting hitting during practices each week.
