Football: Arleta is 11-0 after 42-28 victory over Venice in playoff opener

Mustangs get key stop at end of second quarter

It was expected to be a hard fought City Section Division I playoff opener between No. 7-seeded Arleta and No. 10-seeded Venice. And that’s exactly how the game turned out on Friday afternoon at Arleta.

The game was tied at 7, tied at 14, tied at 21. Then Arleta got second-half touchdowns from Isaiah Gable on runs of three and 84 yards to come away with a 42-28 victory over Venice. The Mustangs improved to 11-0 in advancing to next week’s quarterfinals.

A key play came at the end of the second quarter. With the game tied, 14-14, Venice had the ball on Arleta’s three-yard line with under one minute left. On fourth and inches, Arleta’s defense stopped Dejean Parramore for no gain.

Gable finished with three touchdowns. Parramore had three touchdowns for Venice.

Felix Vega clinched the win for Arleta with a 43-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Sergio Ayala had touchdown runs of one and nine yards in the first half for Arleta.

In a Division II opener, No. 1-seeded Los Angeles defeated Bell, 54-13. Kaymen Cureton completed 17 of 25 passes for 448 yards and four touchdowns. Lejon Shaw caught six passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Justin Rogers caught eight passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Maurhqeze Mason rushed for 122 yards.

In Division III, Manual Arts defeated Marshall, 42-36.
