El Camino Real’s junior varsity team pulled off the trick play of the year in football on Friday.

On the first play of the game against Reseda Cleveland, freshman quarterback Jahlil Pinkett (above) took the snap, started walking to the sideline while shouting, “Coach, wrong ball,” then ran down the sideline untouched for about an 80-yard touchdown.

Coach Brandon Holmes said offensive coordinator Ali Mirbaha put in the trick play after El Camino Real lost the previous week to Taft.

“We put in some fun plays to keep them interested,” he said. “Everyone is acting like it’s a wrong ball. The center had to hand the ball legally. The team was surprised. No one really reacted until he was 30, 40 yards ahead.”

Acting was key by the quarterback, center and everybody on the line. And Pinkett has some acting ties. He’s the newphew of Jada Pinkett Smith.

El Camino Real won the game, 52-6.
