Football: Long Beach Poly is about to become relevant again

Share

Like a bear coming out of hibernation, Long Beach Poly is about to return to relevancy in football. The Pac-5 playoffs begin next week, and Poly has been largely forgotten as it went through the Moore League demolishing one opponent after another.

The scores say everything.

Poly 49, Cabrillo 0; Poly 99, Compton 9; Poly 51, Jordan 10; Poly 49, Lakewood 7; Poly 57, Millikan 0. The last Moore League team on the schedule is Wilson on Friday night.

The big question that needs to be addressed is have the Jackrabbits improved? Former Coach Raul Lara used the league schedule to build up depth and tried to prepare his players for the grind of the Pac-5 playoffs.

We’ll soon find out how first-year Coach Antonio Pierce has done preparing for the Pac-5. Poly is expected to be seeded No. 4 and be in the same bracket as top-seeded St. John Bosco.

What’s clear is that the Jackrabbits have developed their best passing attack in years behind quarterback Josh Love, who has passed for 2,355 yards and 31 touchdowns.
