Football: Long Beach Poly is impressive in 54-14 rout of Crenshaw
Jackrabbits dominate in 54-14 victory
Antonio Pierce, the former Pro Bowl linebacker making his coaching debut for Long Beach Poly, was asked if he was nervous before Saturday’s season opener against Crenshaw at Mission Viejo.
“I feel like a rookie,” he said. “It’s good. I had a good year as a rookie.”
The Jackrabbits left little doubt they’re going to be one of the best teams in Southern California, routing the defending City Section Division I champions, 54-14.
Quarterback Josh Love completed 15 of 18 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for two TDs. Jeremy Calhoun rushed for 78 yards and scored a touchdown. He also caught a swing pass and turned it into a 77-yard TD. Iman Marshall caught a TD pass. Poly’s defense recorded more than a dozen tackles for losses, led by Joseph Wicker, a defensive tackle who had six sacks.
It was a tough opener for Crenshaw, but freshman receiver Rayshawn Williams caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Daiyen Henley and Matthew Malone had a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.
Poly will get to play Narbonne, another City Section school, next week at Veterans Stadium.
