Football: Narbonne shows off lots of defensive hitters in scrimmage

Dominic Peterson shows off his running skills

Narbonne’s green-gold scrimmage on Wednesday night enabled more than 400 fans to have a nice, tasty chicken bowl. And they got to see the makings of the best defensive unit in the City Section.

Opposing teams had better be ready to take some hits from the likes of linebackers Anthony Pandy, Raymond Scott and Darien Butler. The Gauchos have also added a promising transfer at cornerback in John Porter, a senior from Dallas.

But no one came away with a bigger smile or produced more excitement than defensive tackle Dominic Peterson, who made a brief appearance on offense and took a snap in the Gauchos’ version of a fumblerooski and proceeded to run over and away from defenders en route to a touchdown.

Many of his green teammates charged into the end zone to celebrate and he came off the field looking like he had just ridden a ride at Disneyland.

Narbonne, the defending City Section Division 1 champion, has a scrimmage next Thursday night at Chaminade, then the Gauchos open their season on Aug. 26 against Gardena Serra at El Camino College.

Coach Manuel Douglas is still looking for a kicker but he might have one in sophomore soccer player Richardo Martin. Dressed in shorts and wearing a Galaxy T-shirt, he came off the sideline to make a conversion kick. Douglas better sign him up quick.

As usual, Douglas’ green team won, 19-7.
