Football: Pac-5 looks like private schools vs. public schools

Share

There are nine private schools and seven public schools in the Pac-5 Division, and seven of the eight opening round matchups is private vs. public.

Don’t count on the publics winning that battle, but it should be fun seeing how it plays out.

The private vs. public matchups: Long Beach Cabrillo vs St. John Bosco, St. Bonaventure vs. Norco, Servite vs. Long Beach Poly, Serra vs. Corona Centennial, Mater Dei vs. Westlake, Lakewood vs. Bishop Amat, Corona Santiago vs. JSerra. The other matchup has Santa Margarita facing Crespi.

This might be the toughest Pac-5 ever thanks to the addition of Centennial.

Mater Dei is facing the unenvitable task of having to beat teams twice in a season. The Monarchs defeated Westlake, 28-27, in a nonleague game and could face Centennial in the quarterfinals. Centennial lost to Mater Dei, 38-18, in the opener.

The most difficult opener to predict appears to be Crespi-Santa Margarita. Crespi can run the ball. Santa Margarita can pass the ball. Which defense will prevail?

The potential quarterfinal games will be off the charts.
