Football: Servite prepares for the arrival of De La Salle

Share

Concord De La Salle usually visits Southern California in December to play in a CIF state championship bowl game. This season, the Spartans could be making two trips.

On Saturday night, they will face Anaheim Servite in a 7:30 p.m. nonleague game at Santa Ana Stadium.

De La Salle is 5-0 under first-year Coach Justin Alumbaugh, who took over for the legendary Bob Ladouceur, who’s still on the staff as an assistant coach.

First-year Servite Coach A.J. Gass was part of the Friars’ program in 2010, when De La Salle defeated Servite, 48-8.

“We don’t pay attention to that,” he said. “We buried that game.”

Servite (3-1) used its bye week to work more on fixing issues in preparation for the Trinity League next week but the Friars have begun to focus on Del La Salle.

De La Salle has a senior running back, John Velasco, who has gained more than 100 yards in four of five games, including 192 yards last week against San Ramon Valley.

The Spartans’ offensive line remains something opposing teams have to deal with.

“They come off the ball in unison,” Gass said. “They’re timing is impeccable.”

Don’t expect Servite to be intimidated. The Friars own a victory over 19-time Southern Section champion Long Beach Poly this season.
