Football: Steve Hagerty, Scott Altenberg, Troy Thomas turn in top coaching jobs

It’s going to be tough picking a coach of the year in the Mission League, because Steve Hagerty of Bishop Amat, Scott Altenberg of Gardena Serra and Troy Thomas of Crespi have all turned in top performances on and off the field.

All three teams are tied for first place and have dealt with adversity and success.

Bishop Amat recovered from a tough opening loss to Santa Margarita and a disappointing performance against Chino Hills to become a top 10 team with a group of young, feisty players seeking recognition. When its quarterback couldn’t play last week, another stepped in. There have been injuries, suspensions, highs and lows. And yet, the Lancers keep plugging away.

Serra has been stung by a series of injuries. There was a quarterback duel. There was a decision to strengthen the defense at the expense of the offense. There was the transition from easy league to tough league. And through it all, Altenberg has guided everyone. The Cavaliers are looking very dangerous on the eve of the playoffs.

Crespi, with just 30 players, was not considered a title contender as it cruised through the weakest nonleague schedule of any league team. The Celts went to a veer offense that nobody else runs. They stuck to the idea that running the ball at a time when everyone is passing might work. And it has. Thomas has his players believing in themselves.

We’ll see what happens on Friday, but don’t be surprised if Bishop Amat, Serra and Crespi finish tied for first. Each team and each coach deserves a co-championship.
