Football: The formula for figuring out at-large berths for Pac-5 playoffs

Share

Teams in the Trinity and Mission leagues had better start looking for lucky charms.

They will come in handy when the inevitable coin flips are needed to break ties in week 10 in the league standings.

But for football fans trying to figure out which schools will be awarded the two at-large berths for the Pac-5 Division playoffs, let’s review how the teams will be selected.

There’s a formula and criteria for figuring out the at-large teams.

The first criteria is head to head competition. Teams are given four points if they beat the other in consideration for the at-large spot.

The next criteria is overall strength of the league. That’s worth one point.

The next criteria is win-loss record, worth one point.

The next criteria is strength against common opponents, worth one point.

The final criteria is strength of schedule, using overall win-loss record of opponents, worth two points.

So come week nine or 10, when you start evaluating the league standings and trying to figure out who might get the at-large berths, use the formula.

Last year, Crespi got at-large berth ahead of JSerra using the same formula.
