Softball: Jay Creps is fired at Chatsworth after parental complaint

Share

Jay Creps, who guided Chatsworth to the City Section Division I championship game in softball this season, said he was fired last week by Principal Tim Guy after a parent turned in a photo of him drinking beer out of a bottle during a team bonding party at his home that was attended by parents and players in either 2012 or 2013.

Supporters of Creps, 60, have started a petition drive to challenge the decision.

Creps just completed his fifth year as coach. He said parents of a player who quit the team early in league play after not receiving playing time had been trying to have him replaced for weeks.

He said he was followed to a restaurant before Chatsworth’s first playoff game, with a parent taking video of him at lunch, then filing a complaint he was drinking. He said he wasn’t drinking and voluntarily took a field sobriety test from an L.A. Unified School District police officer and passed it.

Then, last Wednesday, Guy confronted him with the photo from the party and told him it was against district policy to have any alcohol at any team function. Creps said he was given the option of resigning or being fired.

“If I had known alcohol was not allowed, there would be no alcohol,” he said.

A message left for Athletic Director Jonathan Sheriff on Tuesday was not returned.
