Spectrum ends TV deal with City Section for prep sports

Share

Spectrum, formerly Time Warner Cable, has decided not to continue televising City Section high school sports events, City Section Commissioner John Aguirre said Monday.

Its five-year deal to cover City Section sports ends in June, and Aguirre said Spectrum does not want to renew the contract and will no longer televise any City Section events effective immediately.

Besides losing TV exposure, the City Section also was given thousands of dollars for broadcast rights, including $84,000 this year, said CIF Executive Director Roger Blake.

Aguirre said the City Section will explore other options.

Two weeks ago, Spectrum informed the San Diego Section that it also will not renew its five-year contract.

Spectrum still has a contract to televise CIF state games as part of a 15-year, $8.5 million deal signed in 2012.
