Kicker Jonathan Kim’s objective: West Point

The varsity football players at Torrance Bishop Montgomery High might want to start practicing salutes to kicker Jonathan Kim, because he figures to one day join his brothers Michael and Justin at the U.S. Military Academy and become an officer.

Michael is a senior and Justin is a freshman playing for the soccer team at West Point. Jonathan has started the process of trying to join them, but in football.

He has been a four-year varsity kicker and made a 47-yard field goal last week in Bishop Montgomery’s season opener. He’s a 4.0 student and has wanted to become an Army officer for years.

“I’ve always watched military shows on TV,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to go to Ranger school.”

His mother shaved the heads of his brothers before they became cadets, and said she’s ready to do the same for Jonathan if he receives an appointment.

Imagine the excitement of his parents, Steve and Young, both of whom were born in South Korea, if he were to go to West Point.

“We’d be so proud,” Steve said. “We are so thankful to have them serve our country.”

Jonathan seems ready for military training. He has no complaints about getting up early, having short hair or being yelled at.

“I’m up for it all,” he said.

There could be one problem, though. What happens if Navy wants him?

He roots for Army against Navy because of his brothers.

“It’s a big conflict,” he said.

When it comes to handling pressure, Kim’s kicking duties provide plenty of preparation. He has made two game-winning field goals and converted 19 of 25 field-goal tries during his sophomore and junior years.

Now it’s just a question of whether Army wants him, and considering that his brothers have been doing quite well, don’t be surprised to see another Kim at West Point next fall.

Headed to Ireland

The Sherman Oaks Notre Dame football team was scheduled to leave at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on a flight to Ireland, in what is believed to be the longest trip for a regular-season game in Southern Section history. Notre Dame will play Hamilton of Chandler, Ariz., on Friday in Dublin. Game time is 11:30 a.m. PDT.

Notre Dame is to return Sunday. The team will attend Saturday’s college game between Notre Dame and Navy in Dublin.

Lots of Thursday games

Because of a holiday on Friday, most City Section teams will play football games Thursday this week.

Division I favorite Harbor City Narbonne is to open on the road in a 3 p.m. game against Palos Verdes. Crenshaw is to play host to Norco in a 7 p.m. game, televised by Time Warner Cable at midnight.
