Tigers strike 5-year, $80-million deal with Anibal Sanchez

The Detroit Tigers have made another major move to help their quest to win a World Series for the first time since 1984.

Right-handed pitcher Anibal Sanchez agreed to an $80-million, five-year contract with the Tigers, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press on Friday. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the agreement hadn’t been finalized, said Sanchez is scheduled for a physical Monday.

Sanchez was a part of Detroit’s four-man rotation that led the franchise to the World Series this year. He had a 1.77 ERA in 20 1-3 innings over three postseason starts, but was 1-2 as Detroit was shut out in each of his losses.

Sanchez is 48-51 with a 3.75 ERA since making his major league debut with the Marlins in 2006.

Ichiro Suzuki and the New York Yankees closed in Friday on a $13-million, two-year contract, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. Also Friday, New York finalized a $12-million, one-year contract with Kevin Youkilis.

Free-agent infielder Ty Wigginton and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a $5-million, two-year contract. Wigginton, 35, will make $2.5 million annually.

Tebow might play in wildcat on Monday night

Tim Tebow might not be done in the wildcat after all. New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan reversed an earlier decision Friday, saying the backup quarterback could possibly participate in the wildcat-style offense and on special teams as the personal punt protector at Tennessee on Monday night.

Ahmad Bradshaw will miss the New York Giants’ game Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons because of lingering knee and foot problems.

Jets rookie defensive lineman Quinton Coples was fined $15,000 by the NFL for grabbing the facemask of Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne.

Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara was fined $15,750 for a horse-collar tackle on New Orleans running back Pierre Thomas.

Detroit offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus was docked $10,000 for a chop block at Green Bay. St. Louis cornerback Cortland Finnegan was fined $10,000 for grabbing Buffalo running back C.J. Spiller by the facemask. Chicago cornerback Charles Tillman was fined $7,875 fine for a late hit on Minnesota running back Toby Gerhart.

Ryan Lochte broke his own world record in the 200-meter individual medley at the short-course world championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Olympic star finished the eight laps in 1 minute 49.63 seconds. Daiya Seto of Japan won the silver in 1:52.80 and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary won the bronze.

The Galaxy traded forward Edson Buddle, the fourth-leading scorer in franchise history, to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for allocation money and Colorado’s first-round pick in next year’s supplemental draft. Buddle, 31, who underwent knee surgery last season, was limited to 10 starts in 2012, scoring three times.

The Galaxy also added two players Friday, selecting Houston midfielder Colin Clark and Columbus keeper Will Hesmer in Major League Soccer’s reentry draft.

USC receiver Marqise Lee and UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin were selected to the Football Writers Assn. of America All-American team.

Lee, a sophomore, has a Pac-12 Conference record 112 receptions for the Trojans, who will play Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 in El Paso. Lee, announced as USC’s most valuable player at the Trojans’ awards banquet Friday night, also was named to four other All-America teams recognized by the NCAA, making him the Trojans’ 27th unanimous All-American, the first since linebacker Rey Maualuga in 2008.

Franklin, a senior, has rushed for 1,700 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Bruins, who play Baylor in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27.

Mount Union of Alliance, Ohio, is back on top of Division III football. Kevin Burke led two second-half touchdown drives and the Purple Raiders ended a three-year losing streak in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl with a 28-10 victory over St. Thomas of Minnesota.

Daniel Popovic maintained a share of the lead after the second day of the Australian PGA at Coolum while Geoff Ogilvy posted another solid round.

Popovic, who nearly gave up golf earlier this year to care for his ill father, followed his opening-round 64 with a two-under 70, including a double-bogey seven on the par-five 15th. The Tour rookie is tied with Zhang Xinjun (67) at 10 under.
