Penn State plans to renovate site of molestation crimes

As Penn State tries to move on following Thursday’s grim reminder of how the university failed to stop Jerry Sandusky from molesting boys on its campus, the school announced it is planning to renovate the areas where some of the incidents occurred.

A university spokesman confirmed Friday that the school is planning to make renovations to the shower and locker room areas of the Lasch Football Building, saying the move has been in the works since shortly after Sandusky’s arrest last year. The former defensive coordinator was convicted of sexually abusing boys in the team shower.

The school is still examining whether it should renovate or remove other on-campus reminders of the scandal.

A statue of former football coach Joe Paterno outside Beaver Stadium has become a target of criticism, and former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden says it should be removed.

“You go to a Penn State football game and there’s 100,000 people down there and they got that statute and you know doggone well they’ll start talking about Sandusky,” Bowden told The Associated Press. “If it was me, I wouldn’t want to have it brought up every time I walked out on the field.”

A report released Thursday by former FBI director Louis Freeh says Paterno and some Penn State officials did not inform authorities of molestation accusations levied against Sandusky in an effort to protect the school’s public image.
