Matt Barnes officially signs with Clippers

As expected, Matt Barnes officially signed with the Clippers on Friday for what is believed to be a one-year deal making the veteran’s minimum.

The small forward who spent the last two seasons with the Lakers could be a key reserve with his new team, providing energy and scoring punch off the bench.

Barnes, a nine-year veteran who has played with eight teams, will be teammates with Blake Griffin, the all-star power forward that Barnes shoved to the ground during a preseason game last year, drawing a flagrant foul.

Barnes, 32, started his NBA career with the Clippers during the 2003-04 season after a standout career at UCLA. He has career averages of 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds.

Barnes faces a felony charge of threatening a public official after an incident late July in Manhattan Beach. Authorities said a police officer, aware that Barnes had an outstanding warrant for a misdemeanor violation of driving on a suspended license, approached him on foot and attempted to arrest him. They charge that Barnes refused to cooperate and threatened the officer.

He is scheduled to appear in a Torrance courtroom Oct. 1.
