NFL’s rookie quarterbacks show big improvement in Week 2

Among rookie quarterbacks in Week 2 of the NFL season, the Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck, the Miami Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill and the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson earned their first victories while the Cleveland Browns’ Brandon Weeden rebounded strongly from one of the worst starts in NFL history. The Washington Redskins’ Robert Griffin III, of course, was his dynamic self in a losing effort.

Luck completed 20 of 31 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Wilson was extremely accurate and efficient as he completed 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown in a 27-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Said veteran receiver Reggie Wayne of Luck: “The kid’s got poise. He’s got some winning in the blood.”

Weeden, who completed only 12 passes and had four intercepted last week, passed for 322 yards -- he completed 26 of 37 throws -- and two touchdowns in a 34-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2. Tannehill passed for 200 yards and a touchdown while running for another score in a 35-13 rout of the Oakland Raiders. Wilson and Tannehill were helped by strong running games and stout defenses.

Griffin connected with Leonard Hankerson on a 68-yard scoring play in the first half of a 31-28 loss to the St. Louis Rams. It was RG3’s only scoring strike as he completed 20 of 29 passes for 206 yards with no interceptions. He also ran for 82 yards and two touchdowns in 11 carries.

RG3 took little consolation in the fact that he played beyond his experience level.

“We lost the game so I didn’t make enough plays to help the team win,” Griffin said. “That’s the bottom line. You’re judged on wins and losses and we didn’t win the game.”
