Broncos release running back Willis McGahee
The Denver Broncos released Willis McGahee on Thursday, parting ways with a Pro Bowl running back who rushed for 1,930 yards over the last two seasons.
“It’s never easy to part ways with a veteran player who made so many positive contributions to our team and community,” Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway said in a written statement. “I appreciate all of the competitiveness, toughness and leadership Willis brought to the Broncos.”
The move is more an indication the Broncos are happy with young running backs Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball than a suggestion they’re punishing McGahee for skipping voluntary workouts this off-season.
Actually, the team did McGahee a favor by releasing him now, when another club is more likely to pick him up, than taking him into training camp and then letting him go.
McGahee skipped most of the team’s off-season program to work out on his own in Miami. He returned for a mandatory mini-camp this week but participated in only a few plays in team drills.
