Allen Iverson, former NBA MVP, will officially retire, report says

Allen Iverson, 38, is prepared to officially announce his retirement in the coming days, according to Slam Online.

Iverson, an 11-time All-Star, has not played in the NBA since the 2009-2010 season, and he has not played professionally since a stint with a team in Turkey in 2011.

Last year Iverson turned down an offer to play for the NBA Development League, and, in March, he said during his bobblehead night at a Philadelphia 76ers game that he wanted to return to the NBA.

Recently Iverson has been in the news for his troubles outside of basketball, including his financial struggles.

Iverson has NBA career averages of 26.7 points and 6.2 assists. He was drafted by the 76ers as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 draft. In 2001, he was named MVP of the league.

“It enabled me — and it has enabled me — to take care of my family,” Iverson said of basketball in an interview with Slam last spring. “It brought me so many fans and people that love me. I met so many great people. And it made me, whether I like it or not, a role model. It built me up, it knocked me down, it taught me how to get back up. It did a lot for me.”
