Tenth-seeded Roberta Vinci beats rain, Camila Giorgi at U.S. Open
NEW YORK -- Rain has arrived at the U.S. Open and so far it has caused the match between No. 2-seeded Victoria Azarenka and 13th-seeded Ana Ivanovic to be postponed until Tuesday.
So far the only lucky finisher is 10th-seeded Roberta Vinci, who beat fellow Italian countrywoman Camila Giorgi, 6-4, 6-2, in 67 minutes Monday. Giorgi had upset sixth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, a former U.S. Open finalist, but her enthusiasm and power were matched and bettered by the 30-year-old Vinci.
The win advanced Vinci to the quarterfinals, where there has been at least one Italian woman for the sixth straight year. “I know I’m not that young,” Vinci said, “but I still enjoy the play. I try to stay focused every single day.”
Vinci will play either 21st-seeded Simona Halep or yet another Italian, Flavia Pennetta, in the quarterfinals.
Sent off court because of the rain, Daniela Hantuchova led young American Alison Riske 6-3, 4-4.
Five-time men’s champion Roger Federer had his match against Philipp Kohlschreiber moved from Arthur Ashe Stadium to Louis Armstrong Stadium. Federer was supposed to go on Ashe after Riske and Hantuchova were finished.
