Jonny DeLuca of Agoura is the rare baseball/track athlete

Share

Jonny DeLuca of Agoura is a junior outfielder headed to Oregon to play baseball. But wait until the Ducks’ track coaches learn about his long jumping skills.

DeLuca decided to also participate in track this season when he’s available, and this month he recorded the top long jump mark in the Southern Section for a junior with a wind-aided jump of 22-10 1/2 during a dual meet.

That’s with hardly practicing, since he’s a starting outfielder for Agoura’s baseball. He’s also running the 100 meters. He has 12 stolen bases, so he’s pretty fast. He used track to help him with baseball.

With help from assistant track coach Ty Davis, DeLuca could be a surprise track athlete this spring. He’s expected to compete at the Arcadia Invitational on April 9 _ as long as there’s no baseball game that day.
