Poway High School center John Colbourne continued to dominate the inside game on Friday as he led the defending San Diego 3-A champions to a 76-43 win over San Dieguito in a Palomar League game at San Dieguito High.

Colbourne, a 1984 Times’ All-County selection, scored 17 points, had 10 rebounds and 8 blocked shots. Poway forward Dominick Johnson led all scorers with 19 points and guard Gary Anderson added 16. Poway improved its records to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in league.

“All the kids played good defense,” Poway Coach Neville Saner said. “We forced turnovers right off.”

The strong defensive play enabled Poway to take a commanding, 24-5, lead after one quarter. It increased the lead to 39-12 at halftime. Poway was able to go to its bench in the second half, something it was unable to do last season when it carried only seven players. Poway showed depth throughout the game on Friday despite playing without starting forward Jud Buechler, who was ill.

“We don’t go to the bench much, but we can more than we did a year ago,” Saner said. “But you’ve got to remember, we have very good starters. And there’s got to be a reason before we take them out of a game.”
