Boys Roundup : Minier Leads Mission Viejo

Mike Minier scored 21 points to lead Mission Viejo High School to a 59-42 win over Laguna Hills in a South Coast League game at Laguna Hills Monday night.

The Diablos outscored the Hawks, 20-8, in the second quarter and 23-10 in the third quarter to pull away for the win. Tom Desiano added 12 points for the Diablos.

Mission Viejo (3-0 in the league and 13-3 overall) shares the league lead with Capistrano Valley. Laguna Hills, which was paced by Greg Halliday’s 12 points, dropped to 0-2 in the league and 8-7 overall.

In other South Coast League action: Dana Hills 56, El Toro 46--Bryan McSweeney scored 19 points and Will Jeffers 15 to lead the Dolphins to the win at Dana Hills. The Chargers were within four points at the end of the third quarter, 34-30, but the Dolphins outscored them, 22-16, in the fourth quarter to assure the victory. Capistrano Valley 98, Irvine 72--The Cougars jumped to a 28-21 first quarter lead and never looked back in this rout at Saddleback College. Gregg Bujnovsky led Capistrano Valley (15-2 overall and 3-0 in the league) with 16 points.

In Century League action:

Foothill 76, Villa Park 35--Twelve players scored during the Knights’ rout in the Spartans’ gym. Jud Dutrisac led Foothill (2-1 in the league, 11-4 overall) with 13 points. Greg Gore had 12 and Ralph Laird added 10.

Villa Park (0-3 in the league, 3-8 overall) was never in the game. The Spartans fell behind, 20-6, after one quarter and trailed at halftime, 40-10.

Santa Ana 63, Santa Ana Valley 50--Center Roger Flores made 11 of 14 free throw attempts in the last quarter to break open a close game. Flores sealed the win by making a free throw, rebounding the miss on his second attempt and hitting a 14-foot jump shot for a 53-46 lead with 48 seconds remaining. The victory improved the Saints’ record to 2-1 in league and 7-6 overall. Santa Ana Valley is 2-1; 3-7.

Canyon 60, Tustin 48--The Comanches won their first league game of the season at home over the Tillers. David Spencer had 15 points and 5 rebounds for the Comanches (1-2 in the league, 6-7 overall) while Steve Gauer of Tustin led all scorers with 24 points.
