Oiler Basketball Team Will Try to Put Brakes on 8-Game Skid

The West Los Angeles College basketball team will try to end its eight-game losing streak against Los Angeles Southwest at 7 p.m. Friday and then take on College of the Canyons at 7 p.m. Wednesday, both at Harbor College.
The leading scorers for Southwest (11-8, 1-1) are forward Darryl Butler, averaging 18.1 points and 7.9 rebounds, followed by guard Manual Carolina (12.7), who leads the team in assists (7.1).
Southwest rebounding is handled by forward Iran Gordon who is averaging 8.6 boards and 8.4 points.
Canyons forward Peter Coeler, averaging 15.3 points, is leading the Mountain Valley Conference in field-goal percentage (57%) and is second in free throws (82%). Guard Deron White is the league leader in assists (8.4).
Carl Tomkins, 6-7 forward/center, is leading Canyons in rebounds (7.1) and averaging 11.3 points.
Oiler Coach Charles Sands said his team’s 73-51 loss to Antelope Valley last week was “the worst we’ve played all year.” Guard Angelo Hudson, who had been averaging 16.9 points, scored only four.
