Area Roundup : Lindgren to Coach Water Polo in World University Games

Cal State Long Beach Coach Ken Lindgren has been named head coach of the U.S. water polo team for the World University Games in Kope, Japan, Aug. 24 through Sept. 4.

Lindgren, who has coached at Cal State Long Beach for the past 10 years, was selected from a list of six candidates by a committee of 35 members of U.S. Water Polo Incorporated. He will be assisted by UC Santa Barbara Coach Pete Snyder and UCLA Coach Bob Horn.

The U.S. squad will be selected in August and will consist primarily of players from the U.S. National “A” Team, coached by Bill Barrett and Steve Heatson.

Eight Orange County residents have been selected as recipients of City Sports Magazine’s Outstanding Achievement Awards for 1984. The awards are presented annually to recognize athletes for their contribution to their sports and their involvement in the community, according to City Sports Publisher Jack Steinman.

Area athletes honored were: Steve Hegg, a cyclist from Dana Point; John Morgan, a swimmer from Huntington Beach; Sally Moore-Huss, a tennis player from Laguna Niguel; Tom Resh, a cyclist from Orange, Ruth Wysocki, a runner from El Toro; Mark Schubert, coach of the Mission Viejo Nadadores swim team; Bob Duesler, a tennis player from Newport Beach and Jim Nelson, a tennis player from Corona del Mar.

Rick Nelson, the nation’s top draft choice, heads a list of seven Orange Coast College baseball players chosen in the Major League Baseball winter draft. Nelson, a 6-5, 220-pound sophomore center fielder, was the top pick of the San Francisco Giants.

Other Pirates chosen were: Dave Rolland (first round, Texas); Orlando Guerra (third round, Baltimore); Tim McKercher (eighth round, Seattle); Steve Kraiss (eighth round, Baltimore); Darrin Garner (second round of secondary phase, Kansas City) and Larry Cratsenberg (second round of secondary phase, Detroit).

Over the past nine years, Orange Coast has had 54 players selected in the baseball draft.

More than 300 disabled children will take part in “Kid’s Fishing Day” today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Santa Ana River Lakes in Anaheim. The event is organized by Ron Mincer and Lou Tyce, both members of the California Paraplegic Veterans Assn.

Youngsters will be provided with their own rods and reels and will be divided into small groups with assigned, volunteer leaders who will assist with hook-baiting, line untangling and other general fishing tips.

Orange County schools participating in the program include: Jordan Secondary Learning Center, Garden Grove; Thurston Junior High, Laguna Beach; El Moro School, Laguna Beach; Hope School, Anaheim; McFadden Intermediate, Santa Ana; Carl Harvey Junior High for the Orthopedically Disabled, Santa Ana; R.H. Dana School for the Orthopedically Disabled, Dana Point and the Tustin Unified School District.

Scott Hoganson of Orange took top honors in the Fifth Traditional Karate Tournament, held Jan. 13 in Las Vegas. Hoganson, 34, finished first in the Black Belt Weapons competition, second in the KATA (form) contest and was named the tournament’s best competitor. . . . Dr. Peter Reynolds, an orthopedic surgeon and a specialist in sports medicine, and Long Beach City Cross Country Coach Pat Patterson will be the featured speakers at the “Running Clinic,” Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Carmen Yuppa Conference Center across from Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach. The clinic is free to the public and will give special emphasis to running injuries and endurance.
