College Baseball : No. 3 Texas Defeats Fullerton

The third-ranked University of Texas scored four runs in the seventh inning to overpower Cal State Fullerton, 5-1, in nonconference baseball action at Austin Monday.

The Longhorns scored in the first innning with one out. Second baseman Bill Bates singled to left, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bates scored on grounder by Dodd Johnson.

That was it for Texas until the seventh. Then, with two outs, an error by Fullerton first baseman Kevin Reimer allowed David Wrzesinski to reach first. Two Longhorn batters walked to load the bases. Fullerton brought on pitcher Mike Schooler who gave up a double to Bates. Johnson’s single drove in a run to make it 5-0, Texas.

Fullerton scored in the eighth. The first three batters were walked and pinch-hitter Jef Garcia grounded to short to drive in a run.

The Titans are 9-10-1 while Texas is 11-3.

Daniel Pena was the winning pitcher and Mike Harkey (0-3) took the loss.

In junior college baseball action:

West Los Angeles 8, Cypress 7--The Oilers (6-4) got the win at home Monday. Cypress, helped by John Morin’s two-run home run, held on to a a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Lorenzo Lesky walked and Dejon Watson singled. Jim Votcher’s sacrifice fly to center scored Lesky. West L.A. added one run in the ninth.

Both teams are 6-3. Kevin Dennis was the winning pitcher while Brian Leonard took the loss.
