Prep Baseball : Capistrano Valley Scores in Seventh to Beat University

Capistrano Valley High School got a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to squeeze out a 3-2, nonleague victory over University on Wednesday at Capistrano Valley.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Jeff Kelley walked, stole second and scored when Tommy Adams’ fly ball was misplayed, and the Cougars came away with the win.

Winning pitcher Ricky Jones went the distance on a five-hitter and struck out five to improve his record to 2-0. Capistrano Valley is 3-1. Nathan Call went 3 for 3 and had RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings for the Cougars.

University (2-1) scored single runs in the first and second innings on RBI singles by Jeff Stombaugh and Mark Favorite. Todd Krueger was the losing pitcher.

NONLEAGUE

Sunny Hills 10, Kennedy 0--Senior right-hander Paul Abbott pitched a two-hitter, struck out 14 and also had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Lancers to a win over the Irish at Anaheim’s Brookhurst Park.

David Wackerman added two hits and four RBIs to help Sunny Hills improve its record to 4-1.

Valencia 13, Esperanza 5--Andy Ruscitto went 2 for 4 and hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to lead the Tigers to the win over the Aztecs at Valencia. Tim Churchill added four hits, including a solo homer in the third inning, and four RBIs, while Randy Garcia went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs to help the Tigers improve their record to 4-0.

Shayne Smith went the distance to get the win.

Brea-Olinda 9, La Habra 3--Wildcat designated hitter David Kain (2 for 3) drove in three runs in the first inning with a triple. Brea’s Jim Genty was also 2 of 3 and scored three runs. Steve Chacon got the win going five innings and striking out nine. Kain pitched 1 innings and struck out five.

Dana Hills 4 Savanna 2--The Dolphins broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth when center fielder David Lyon scored on an error. Dana Hills’ David Kirkpatrick was 2 for 3 including a home run in the third inning. Tim Strauch (1-0-) was the winning pitcher.

Laguna Hills 4, Mary Star 3--Winning pitcher Wayne Helm struck out nine in six innings of work. Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks scored twice on a two-out, two-run single by right fielder Sean Hardy. Laguna Hills had only three hits in the game. The other two were back-to-back doubles in the third inning.

St. John Bosco 8, Bolsa Grande 3--Winning pitcher Dan Archuleta struck out 13 batters. Brave third baseman Tom Tondle doubled in two runs in the second inning. Bolsa Grande is 0-5. St. John Bosco is 3-1.

GLENDORA TOURNAMENT

Sonora 14, Baldwin Park 4--Rob Stuart, Dennis Brakebill, Brian Miller, Mitch Kaylor and Jim Cheshire all homered to lead the Raiders to the semifinal win at Glendora’s Henderson Field. Kaylor, a freshman second baseman, went 4 for 5 with three RBIs.

David Bird pitched 5 innings to earn the victory for Sonora, which improved to 4-2. The Raiders will play Glendora on Friday night for the tournament championship.
