Preps PLAYOFFS : Montclair Prep Takes Advantage of Bishop, 11-3

Starting pitcher Curtis Minks struck out 10 in five innings, and reliever Reggie Smith struck out five more to lead Montclair Prep to an 11-3 Southern Section 1-A playoff win over Bishop at Valley College Friday.

Trailing 3-2 in the third inning, the Mounties took advantage of seven Bishop errors and scored eight runs. J.R. Smith was 1 for 3 with three runs batted in on a key double, and Scott Randall went 2 for 3 and had three stolen bases.

The Mounties (17-7) meet St. Anthony on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a second-round playoff game.

Providence 12, Coast Christian 3

Coast Christian committed nine errors, and the Providence Pioneers advanced to the second round of the Small School 1-A playoffs. Tony Ross was 3 for 3 and drove in two runs for Providence. Jeff Cirillo was the winning pitcher.

Despite giving up 11 hits, David Chong pitched a complete game for Coast Christian. He also accounted for all the Saints runs as he hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh.

San Marino 4, Chaminade 1

Randy Anton homered, and Mike Harwell pitched a four-hitter as San Marino eliminated Chaminade in a 1-A playoff.

San Marino took the lead in the second inning when Scott Robertson singled, stole second and scored on Brad Kirk’s single. Kirk scored the game-winning run on a Chaminade error.

Pablo Suarez took the loss, giving up six hits. Suarez also homered for the Eagles.

St. Anthony 6, St. Genevieve 2

Despite seven hits and five St. Anthony errors, St. Genevieve could manage only two runs and were eliminated from the Southern Section 1-A playoffs.

St. Genevieve left the bases loaded twice and made three errors.

Jeff DeLaCruz was 2 for 4, and Jeff Windward went 2 for 3 in the Valiants’ losing effort. St. Genevieve ended the season 14-8.

SOFTBALL

Chaminade 3, La Serna 1

Visiting Chaminade, which finished second in the San Fernando Valley League, advanced to the second round of the Southern Section playoffs by defeating La Serna, the Whitmont League champions.

Kathleen Talbot and Jennifer Brown went 1 for 3 and had 1 RBI each in the Eagles’ win.
