Share

It may be summer, but prep football isn’t over yet.

Some of the area’s top prep football players will play June 28 at San Diego Mesa College for Fellowship Bowl III, a game between the North and South All-Star teams.

Herb Meyer, coach of El Camino High School, the 2-A division champions, and Poway High’s Dave Boulware will coach the North while Paul Wargo of Granite Hills and Chris Miller of Crawford will coach the South.

The county’s top quarterback last season, Eric Bridge of University City, will team with Times’ All-County receivers Jim Rhinehart of Orange Glen and Travis Knox of San Dieguito to lead the North. Darron Norris, a Times’ All-County running back from El Camino, is also expected to compete for the North.

The South, meanwhile, will be led by Times’ Back of the Year Ron Cortell of Sweetwater. Others expected to compete for the South are quarterbacks Carlos Siragusa of Sweetwater, Tony Dill of Mount Miguel and Times’ All-County tight end Darnell Woods.

An awards dinner featuring guest speaker Billy Shields of the San Francisco 49ers is set for June 27.

The Cincinnati Reds will have a tryout camp and clinic for ballplayers between the ages of 15 and 23 at Palomar College starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. The camp will be conducted under the supervision of Reds’ scouts. Players must bring their equipment. No player who is on an active major or minor league draft list may participate and members of American Legion teams must have written permission from their coaches if they wish to try out.
