Three multiple-alarm grass fires burned a total of 20 acres Tuesday, and a fourth fire Wednesday morning caused $60,000 damage to an Ocean Beach home, a San Diego Fire Department spokesman said.

The home of Sandra Meegan, in the 4900 block of Long Branch Avenue, was fully consumed in flames when firefighters arrived at 3:20 a.m., said Dennis McNeill, a fire department spokesman.

A cigarette that ignited a sofa caused the fire, McNeill said. The fire caused $50,000 to the structure of the house, and $10,000 damage to its contents, he said.

Seventy-five firefighters Tuesday fought a 12-acre arson fire in the Skyline district, in a canyon south of Peter Pan Avenue, McNeill said. The Metro Arson Strike Team took into custody two youths but later released them into the custody of their parents, he said. One firefighter sprained his ankle battling the 5:15 p.m. blaze, he said.

At 6:30 Tuesday evening about 40 firefighters fought a grass fire in the Valencia Park area, McNeill said. The fire burned about four acres and was probably set, he said. Another grass fire Tuesday afternoon burned about four acres at the end of Sweetwood Street and destroyed a tool shed, McNeill said. The cause of that fire was unknown.
