NEW YORK — Mark Holmes of Easton, Pa., the 25-year-old brother of heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, will fight John Collins Aug. 3 at the Catholic Youth Center in Scranton, Pa., for the vacant U.S. Boxing Association middleweight title.
The Holmes-Collins bout, scheduled for 12 rounds, is being promoted by Murad Muhammad and will be televised by NBC. The title belonged to James Kinchen. The USBA stripped him of it when he fought James Schuler last February but refused to put the title on the line.
The younger Holmes, ranked 11th by the World Boxing Council, has won all 32 of his professional bouts, 15 by knockout. Collins, also 25, of Chicago, is 32-1-1 with 21 knockouts and is ranked eighth by the WBC and seventh by the World Boxing Association.
The youth center was the site of Larry Holmes’ first pro fight, in 1973. He also defended his heavyweight crown against Lucien Rodriguez in Scranton two years ago.
