2nd Pro Team to Train at Cal Poly

For the second time this year, a pro sports team has decided to train at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Portland Breakers of the United States Football League trained at the school in February and now the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Assn. have announced they will be at Cal Poly’s Kellogg Gym and Poly Pavilion starting Sept. 28.

Mike Tracey, associate athletic director at Cal Poly, said the arrival of the Clippers should improve the school’s exposure in Southern California.

“We feel we have a fine facility here and we want to show it off,” Tracey said. “We feel our facility is one of the best-kept secrets. It’s as good as any in the area but we’ve been overshadowed by the bigger schools.”

Tracey said Athletic Director Karen Miller has left an open door for pro teams to train at Cal Poly. “The door is open for teams to come and we have the facilities, but they (pro teams) have to meet our requirements and work around our class schedule,” he said.

The school announced that the Clippers will play an exhibition against the Portland Trailblazers on Oct. 6 at 4,700-seat Kellogg Gym. The Clippers played Golden State in an exhibition there last year.

Pomona-Pitzer College has added two assistants to its football coaching staff for next season, Coach Clarence Thomas has announced.

George Perry was hired as offensive backfield coach and Scott Shier was named offensive line coach.

Perry, former assistant coach with the Los Angeles Express of the United States Football League, coached at Pomona High for six years and Cal Poly Pomona for one. A graduate of Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., Perry also coached for two years at the University of Washington.

Shier, a former player at the University of La Verne, has been a football and basketball assistant at La Verne and was track and field coach at Bonita High last season.
