Tronson Leads CSUN Win in Soccer Classic

John Tronson scored two goals Friday night to lead Cal State Northridge to a 3-2 victory over San Diego State in the UNLV Rebel Soccer Classic. In the first game, Nevada-Las Vegas defeated Bowling Green, 4-1.

Tronson’s winning goal came at 39:09 when he took a crossing pass from Rodney Batt and scored on a header from 18 feet past goalie Daryl Pater.

The NCAA Division II Matadors took a 1-0 lead over Division I San Diego State at 6:54 on a goal by Rick Gora, assisted by Frank Cubillos. Tronson made it 2-0 at 7:26 when he scored an unassisted goal on a shot from 60 feet, but San Diego Sate cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal by Steve Boardman, assisted by Eric Drabb, at 14:16.

Tronson’s second goal made it 3-1 and San Diego State closed out the scoring at 80:11 on a goal by Tim Homan, assisted by Ted Wacker.

Northridge goalie Phil Heaver made six saves while Pater made five saves for San Diego State.

Northridge is 5-0-0 while San Diego State is 1-2-1.

The Matadors face UNLV today at 7 p.m. for the tournament championship.
