It doesn’t take a great knowledge of the game to understand why Magnolia High School easily defeated Buena Park, 24-0, in Glover Stadium Thursday night.

The Sentinels did everything right whereas the Coyotes did everything wrong.

Magnolia was able to control the ball, score in each quarter and keep Buena Park out of the end zone to improve its record to 2-1.

The Sentinels took the lead in the first quarter on a 25-yard touchdown run by tailback James Hargis.

Taking a pitch on a sweep, Hargis followed his blocks well, saw the outside open and simply ran around the corner of the defense for the score.

At only 5-feet 5-inches and 145 pounds, Hargis hardly looks fearsome, but he lead all rushers with 59 yards in 13 carries.

Kirk Hainline kicked a 21-yard field goal with two seconds left in the second quarter to give the Sentinels a 10-0 halftime lead.

Not much changed in the second half. In the middle of the third quarter the Sentinels drove 73 yards in four plays for a touchdown. The score came on a 42-yard pass-play from Mike Tietge to Chris Korpela to make it 17-0 in favor of Magnolia.

The Sentinels finished their scoring on a 36-yard touchdown run by Ed Pauley with eight minutes left.

The Coyotes played reasonably well on defense, but the offense managed only 87 yards for the evening, all that of that coming on the ground. Buena Park quarterbacks Scott Milligan and Dave Baylor were a combined 0-for-14.
